This square before was known as Plebiscito square. During the 60's, after the demolition of some older buildings, the municipality decided to dedicate the square to the famous poet Sebastiano Satta. The design of the new square is an idea of Costantino Nivola, who was in America in that time but he accepted the job to reconstructure. It was ended in 1966.
In the beginning Nivola centered his attention to the knowledge about the poet, trying to keep more information as he could, even talking to the people who known Satta. But in the end he prefered the minimalist way, using little statues in bronze.
The shape of the square is very uncommon and is surrounded by various buildings in a very unregular form; the Nivola's project needed the buildings to be white with frescos that represented rural scenes. There are various granite stones token from mount Ortobene, with little statues those represent scenes of Satta's life. But theese statues don't have the purpose to perfectly similar to the poet, but just to give the idea of Satta's philosophy.
The square was used to parking meanwhile today is used only for events.
